Perky Hostess Rides Again by Kurt & Waverlyn Karch Over the years of being the ’69 H/O Advisor, many interesting photos and supportive literature from back in the day have made it into our hands. Among them, a newspaper clipping from May, 1969 of a new ’69 H/O on display in a Pennsylvania shopping mall automotive display. The picture also featured a “perky hostess” sitting on the car to boot. We always thought that would be fun to recreate this if we got the chance someday. That chance occurred this past December when the Santa Clothes Telethon hosted a car show for their fundraising event in the Washington Square Mall in Evansville, Indiana. Upon hearing about the event, we quickly called the mall to reserve our space in the show as we had never participated in a mall show before. So the first part of recreating the past was set…now for the “hostess” part. Several years ago, the hosts for an Oldsmobile Club of America National Meet encouraged car owners to dress the era of their car for the meets grand finale banquet. We decided to participate, and Wave had a good friend make a dress very reminiscent of those worn by Miss Hurst, Linda Vaughn when she promoted the cars when they were new. Needless to say, Wave attracted a lot of attention at the banquet!!! I suggested she wear that outfit to the mall for the day of the telethon, December 9th to make the “perky hostess” come alive again in a nostalgic way. Wave was reluctant at first, but then agreed and she ended up wearing a long overcoat most of the day in the mall with her white go-go boots sticking out the bottom. When the time was right, we did our best to recreate a similar pose…of course that too caused a lot of attention again. There were many Mustangs on display, and one of those car owners asked seriously if Wave was indeed Linda Vaughn!!! So it turned out to be quite a fun day and Wave ended up posing for a few Mustang owners as well. In 2008, we will have owned our ’69 H/O for 25 years, and it is quite exciting to discover new ways to have fun and enjoy the car…after all, can’t drag race all of the time!!! |
