On August 27, 2004, at the Oldsmobile Club of America’s National Meet, the Hurst/Olds Club of America became caretakers of the Hurst Hairy Olds. Dennis Mothershed, who worked tirelessly with many others to resurrect Hairy, sold the vehicle to the club for a whopping sum of $1 dollar! On hand with Dennis for the event were Dale Smith, retired Oldsmobile engineer, Dick Chrysler, ex Hurst employee who rose to become owner of Cars and Concepts, Linda Vaughn and many of the volunteers and fans of the Hairy Olds.
Dennis Mothershed addresses the crowd and explains the story of the resurrection of Hairy. Dennis also told of the procurement of several of Hairys original equipment and thanked the numerous volunteers who helped with Hairy.
Dale Smith, retired Oldsmobile engineer, explained how they sneaked parts ‘out the back door’ of Oldsmobile for special projects like Hairy.
Dick Chrysler, who started at Hurst pushing a broom, rose to become owner of Cars & Concepts, who eventually bought Hurst out. Dick told of how he became involved with Hairy and entertained the crowd with a drag strip story of Hairy and the corn field adventure.
Linda Vaughn had a few of her own Hairy stories, including the corn field jaunt. She also amused the audience with a California drag strip story where some undergarments were stolen, interesting….
Calvin Badgley, H/OCA president, gladly signs the papers for the club to take ownership of hairy. Calvin also paid Dennis the sizeable sum of $1 dollar for the car.
A few of the volunteers and individuals that provided parts and or services for the resurrection of Hairy were on hand for this event.
Through the effort of various manufacturers and members of the Oldsmobile Club of Iowa, the Hurst Hairy Olds has been resurrected from the past. After a 33 year rest, Hairy is back on it’s feet again. With the helpful eye of Joe Schubeck, the original driver, and Animal Bob Lathrum, the original mechanic, Hairy has gone through a frame up restoration.
September 23rd, 2000 marked the calendar as the official re-birth of the Hairy Hurst Olds. With the help of Mr. Gasket/Hurst, Dick Miller Racing, Arias Pistons, Mooneyes USA, Innovators West, Milodon, US Body Source, Crankshaft Specialties, PUI Interiors, The Parts Place, Fusick Automotive and numerous Oldsmobile Club members from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Hurst Hairy Olds was displayed as a work in progress as the 21st Annual Quad States Show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
A professionally produced sign accompanied the Hurst Hairy Olds while on tour for 2001 and 2002 as pictured above left. Nebraska Oldsmobile Club member Mike Siedlik of Columbus made this sign at his fathers shop in Omaha. Detailing the basic story of the Hurst Hair Olds along with all the sponsors ad contributors, Mike has made a very nice gift to the project.
